Highlights from the Nevis Women’s Health Pop-Up Shop

Recently, we had the pleasure of partnering with the Nevis Department of Gender Affairs and the Nevis Health Promotion Unit to host the Nevis edition of our Women’s Health Pop-Up Shop at the Malcolm Guishard Recreational Park. The event brought together NGOs, small businesses, private healthcare providers, and government departments in a vibrant, welcoming space dedicated entirely to women’s health and wellbeing.

The Pop-Up Shop was designed with a clear goal: to create a safe, positive, and accessible environment where women could connect, learn, and engage with a wide range of health-related services and information. Throughout the day, the space was filled with meaningful conversations, shared experiences, and a strong sense of community.

Women who attended had access to a variety of free health checks provided by partners including the Health Promotion Unit and private clinics. This was a key component of the event, helping to remove barriers to care and encouraging women to take proactive steps towards managing their health.

In addition, vendors showcased a diverse range of products and services—from wellness and self-care items to health education resources—highlighting the breadth of support available to women across Nevis and the wider Federation.

Why Gender and Health Matters

Events like the Women’s Health Pop-Up Shop are more than just community gatherings; they play an important role in addressing gender disparities in health.

Women often face unique health challenges, including a higher burden of certain non-communicable diseases, reproductive and menstrual health conditions, and barriers to accessing timely and appropriate care. Social and cultural factors can also influence how women experience health and healthcare, from caregiving responsibilities to stigma around certain conditions.

By creating dedicated spaces focused on women’s health, we can:

  • Improve awareness and health literacy
  • Encourage early detection and prevention
  • Foster open conversations around often stigmatised topics
  • Strengthen connections between women and service providers
  • Empower women to advocate for their own health and wellbeing

In a region like the Caribbean, where non-communicable diseases remain a significant public health challenge, these efforts are particularly important.

Promoting Movement and Physical Activity

Movement and physical activity were key highlights of the day, with taster sessions designed to demonstrate that staying active can be both enjoyable and accessible.

The event began with a calming and restorative yoga session led by Amanda Parr, offering participants an opportunity to improve flexibility, balance, and relaxation while reducing stress and promoting mindfulness.

This was followed by a high-energy Zumba session with Myra Romain, which brought participants together through music and dance, supporting cardiovascular health, coordination, and overall mood.

These sessions served as a powerful reminder that exercise does not have to feel like a chore; it can be social, fun, and something to look forward to, regardless of age or fitness level.

Encouraging Rest and Self-Care

Alongside physical activity, the Pop-Up Shop also emphasised the importance of rest and self-care, an often overlooked but essential aspect of overall wellbeing.

Attendees were introduced to a variety of self-care practices, including art therapy and breathwork sessions facilitated by Island Girls Rock, Thai massage demonstrations with Amanda Parr, and rejuvenating massage experiences by Phenomenal Wellness Spa.

These activities highlighted simple yet effective ways to pause, reset, and prioritise wellbeing in the midst of busy daily lives. They reinforced the message that self-care does not need to be complex—it can start with taking a moment to breathe, reflect, and care for oneself.

Looking Ahead

The success of the Women’s Health Pop-Up Shop reflects the power of collaboration and the importance of creating intentional spaces for women’s health. By bringing together organisations, healthcare providers, and the community, we are able to increase awareness, improve access to services, and support women in leading healthier lives.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all our partners, vendors, facilitators, and the Malcolm Guishard Recreational Park team for helping to make this event possible. Most importantly, we thank the women who attended and contributed to the warm, supportive atmosphere that made the day so special.

We look forward to continuing this work and creating more opportunities to support women across St. Kitts and Nevis.
