On 22nd May 2023, we were delighted to host the St. Kitts Premiere of the powerful documentary ‘Below the Belt’ which focuses on the experiences of women who are living with endometriosis.

Background

Endometriosis is a chronic condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, causing pain, infertility, and other symptoms that significantly impact a woman’s quality of life. Unfortunately, accurate diagnosis, effective treatment, and adequate support for women with endometriosis are often lacking, leading to prolonged suffering and unmet needs.

Raising awareness about endometriosis and other chronic reproductive conditions is crucial for several reasons. It helps individuals recognise the signs and symptoms, seek early intervention, and find support. Additionally, healthcare professionals need increased awareness to improve accurate diagnosis and treatment approaches. Moreover, raising awareness reduces stigma and promotes a more supportive society for women with these conditions.

To begin to address these challenges in St Kitts and Nevis, we recently hosted the Below the Belt Film Screening and Panel Discussion.

About Below the Belt

Below the Belt shares the personal and inspiring stories of four patients who are urgently searching for answers to mysterious symptoms. The documentary exposes the widespread problems that women with chronic reproductive conditions face. Through the lens of endometriosis, a disease that affects 1 in 9 women, the film shows how women are often dismissed, discounted and disbelieved. It explores issues such as societal taboos, gender bias, misinformed doctors, and profit-driven healthcare. The film reveals how millions are silenced, and how, by fighting back, we can improve healthcare for everyone.

About Our Event

This event aimed to shed light on the experiences of women living with endometriosis, fostering open dialogue, education, and empowerment. The film provided a powerful depiction of the challenges faced by women with endometriosis, resonating with attendees and sparking heartfelt conversations. Women bravely shared their personal experiences, creating a sense of community and support.

After the screening of Below the Belt, we hosted a panel discussion to explore some of the issues raised during the film and to provide a local context. The panel was moderated by Dentrecia Blanchette and featured the following:

  • Saros Hendrickson, Acting Director, Department of Gender Affairs, Nevis
  • Zahra Jacobs, President, Mental Health Association
  • Davina Baptiste, Certified Women’s Wellness Coach, Wellness With Davina B
  • Gillian Carmicheal-Branford
  • Elica Morton- Hanley.
