Yoga in the Park was a weekly community wellness initiative organised by Lake Health and Wellbeing, in partnership with Mrs Jay Robinson, a registered yoga teacher.

Launched in April 2024, the project ran for one year and offered open-air yoga sessions every Saturday at 7:00 a.m. at National Heroes Park. The sessions brought together locals and visitors alike, creating a welcoming and inclusive space to move, breathe, and prioritise wellbeing in a calm and supportive environment.

Why Yoga in the Park?

Yoga is a gentle yet powerful form of physical activity with well-established health benefits. Regular practice can improve flexibility, strength, balance and cardiovascular health, while also helping to reduce stress, anxiety and tension.

Through Yoga in the Park, our primary aim was to improve the health and wellbeing of our community and encourage consistent, accessible physical activity. The initiative aligns with national efforts to promote holistic health and responds to the urgent need to NCDs, which account for approximately 80% of deaths in the Federation.

By removing common barriers such as location and experience level, Yoga in the Park created an opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to engage in movement and self-care.

Our Impact

Over the course of the year, Yoga in the Park became a valued weekly routine for participants. Attendees consistently shared how the sessions positively affected their physical health, mental wellbeing and motivation to stay active.

“The issue with my back, I believe they have improved and overall I feel good. I feel the changes in my body as well.”

“It’s the only time during the week where I actually relax, especially the last part where you clear your mind. I find that very therapeutic.”

“Even if I don’t get to come, I remember some of the moves.”

“Yoga has been good for me to work on my flexibility. I have a rod in my back, and it’s been helpful. It’s one step in my fitness journey.”

In addition to participant feedback, the project received wider recognition and support:

  • Endorsed by the Ministry of Health’s SKN Moves Committee, highlighting our contribution to national health initiatives.
  • Promoted by the St. Kitts Tourism Authority, showcasing our yoga sessions as part of the island’s wellness tourism offering.

Final Words

Yoga in the Park demonstrated the power of simple, community-led initiatives to support healthier lifestyles, improve mental wellbeing, and facilitate social connection. The success of the project reinforces the importance of accessible, enjoyable physical activity as part of ongoing efforts to tackle NCDs and promote holistic health in St. Kitts and Nevis.

We are grateful to everyone who participated, supported, and made Yoga in the Park a part of their week.
