An Introduction to Mental Health for Journalists

We were pleased to partner with the Media Association of St. Kitts and Nevis, the Nevis Behavioural Health & Wellness Centre, and the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF) to host a webinar titled “An Introduction to Mental Health and Wellbeing for Journalists.”

Journalists play a critical role in society. Through their reporting, they help raise awareness, educate the public, challenge stigma, and advocate for positive change. However, journalism is also a high-pressure and emotionally demanding profession, particularly when covering sensitive issues such as trauma, violence, illness, and social injustice. This webinar was designed to support journalists not only in how they report on mental health issues, but also in how they care for their own mental wellbeing.

The session explored best practices for reporting on mental health in a sensitive, ethical, and responsible way, with an emphasis on language, framing, and the potential impact of media coverage on individuals and communities. Importantly, the discussion also highlighted practical strategies journalists can use to manage stress, recognise signs of burnout, and prioritise their mental health while navigating the demands of their work.

We were grateful to be joined by two knowledgeable and engaging guest speakers. Mr. Mc Millan Cuffy, Mental Health Counsellor and Supervisor at the Nevis Behavioural Health & Wellness Centre, shared valuable insights on mental health, stigma, and self-care. Mrs. Ivy Shih, Project Manager for the Mental Health Service System Enhancement Project in St. Kitts and Nevis, provided an overview of mental health services and system strengthening efforts within the Federation. The session was moderated by Abi Begho, Programme Director at Lake Health and Wellbeing.

This webinar marked the second session in our journalist engagement series, following an earlier session focused on disability issues.

We extend our sincere thanks Mr. Andre Huie, President of the Media Association of St. Kitts and Nevis, and all the journalists who participated in this meaningful and insightful discussion.

We look forward to continued collaboration with media professionals as we work together to promote good health and wellbeing, reduce stigma, and encourage responsible health reporting across the Federation.
