Animating the Message: The Use of Animation in Public Health Advocacy

On 28th May 2022, we hosted a webinar that explored the use of animation in public health advocacy.  We explored animation as a digital advocacy tool and discussed practical uses of animation, the impact animation has had on non-communicable disease advocacy campaigns in the Caribbean, the process of developing an animation for digital advocacy and the pros and cons of animating public health messages.

The Role of Law in Public Health Policy: An Examination of Tobacco Control and SSB Policies

On 28th March 2022, Lake Health and Wellbeing hosted a webinar in collaboration with the St. Kitts and Nevis Bar Association, the Ministry of Health and UWI on The Role of Law in Public Health Policy: An Examination of Tobacco Control and SSB Policies. Speakers included:

– Dr Marissa Carty, the NCD Programme Coordinator at the Ministry of Health in St Kitts and Nevis

– Nicole Foster, Deputy Dean and Head, Health and Law Research Unity at the University of the West Indies

Welcome remarks were provided by Mr Garth Wilkin, the President of the Bar Association and closing remarks were delivered by Rhonda Nisbett-Browne, Member of the Bar Association

Strengthening Civil Society's Role in Health Advocacy: Session 2

On 25th March 2022, Lake Health and Wellbeing hosted an online workshop on strengthening civil society’s role in health advocacy. During this workshop, attendees learnt about the role and importance of civil society in the movement to advocate for evidence-based health policies and interventions to improve the public’s health and wellbeing. We explored how to plan, develop and monitor an advocacy campaign and explored important advocacy strategies such as digital advocacy, the use of traditional media and stakeholder engagement. We also explored the successes of advocates from across the world using sugar-sweetened beverages as a case study.

Community-Based Approaches to Tackling Childhood Obesity in St Kitts and Nevis

In recognition of World Obesity Day, Lake Health hosted a webinar on Saturday 5th March 2022.

This event aimed to highlight the great work that civil society organisations are doing in St. Kitts and Nevis to improve the health of young people and to tackle childhood obesity.

 

Strengthening Civil Society's Role in Health Advocacy: Session 1

On 25th February 2022, we hosted an online workshop that aimed to provide civil society organisations with guidance on how to develop and implement successful health-related advocacy campaigns.

This first session provided an introduction to the topic, raised awareness of the role of CSOs, highlighted how to develop an effective advocacy campaign and explored stakeholder engagement and mapping as well as digital advocacy. 

Virtual Announcement of the Dance Competition Winners

On 4th December 2021, we hosted a virtual event to announce the winners of the You’re Sweet Enough Dance Competition. 

This competition was a collaboration with the Ministry of Education’s Curriculum Development Unit and was sponsored by Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, Pure Water and the Taiwan ICDF. 

A big thank you to everyone who participated and congratulations to all the winners.

Panel Discussion: An All of Society Approach to Tackling NCDs

On 25th August 2021, we organised and moderated a panel discussion that explored the role of society in preventing and controlling NCDs through healthy eating and drinking approaches.

The panel was moderated by our Advocacy Officer, Isalean Phillip, and featured the following panelists:

  • Dr Marissa Carty, NCD Coordinator, St Kitts and Nevis Ministry of Health
  • Dr Al Pierre, VP of the St Kitts and Nevis Medical and Dental Association
  • Andre Huie, Director of SKN Newsline
  • Jalanie Belle, a member of the St Kitts National Youth Parliament Association
  • Pastor Philip Webbe, a member of the St Kitts Evangelical Association

Digital Advocacy – A Powerful Civil Society Tool for Change

On 1st July 2021, we took part in a lunchtime session at the Healthy Caribbean Coalition’s virtual conference, “Our Food, Our Health, Our People: Accelerating Healthy Food Policies to Tackle NCDs.” The session we participated in was entitled “Digital Advocacy – A Powerful Civil Society Tool for Change ” and we shared the lessons we have learnt so far from our You’re Sweet Enough campaign.

Webinar: The Dangers of Sweetened Beverages in the African Diaspora

The Secrets of Sugar Film Screening and Discussion

As part of our You’re Sweet Enough campaign we hosted a film screening of The Secrets of Sugar and this was followed by a discussion.

Our founder, Abi Begho, and our Advocacy and Research Officer, Isalean Phillip, had an engaging discussion about the issues raised in the documentary including the food and beverage industry’s role in the obesity crisis and approaches to reducing the public’s consumption of sugar.

We had a fun time partnering with In Ya Kitchen and the St. Kitts Health Promotion Unit to create some tasty, easy to make unsweetened beverages as part of our You’re Sweet Enough campaign.

In this video, we teamed up with the In Ya Kitchen team to show you how to make a healthier alternative to soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages.
