We Welcome Our New Project Assistant

We are absolutely delighted to welcome our new Project Assistant, Jay Robinson, to the team. Jay brings extensive experience from the health and non-profit sectors, where she has worked with underserved communities, including the elderly. She is also a highly trained and experienced yoga instructor. Below, you can learn more about Jay and what inspired her to pursue a career in health.

Can you tell us about your career journey so far?

My career journey began in 1997 in Queens, New York. I was a teacher for persons with developmental disabilities. As I moved to different states and countries, working with underserved populations has been my passion. Before working for myself teaching yoga and holistic health, I was a Director of a community center, a Benefits Coordinator for a large non-profit, and an Activity Director for senior living facilities. In all of my roles, I encouraged positive mental health, being active, and making healthy living a priority.

What inspired you to pursue a career in health?

There are so many instances in my life that influenced me to choose health as a career path. My oldest son was diagnosed with cancer when he was seven, my mother passed away from colon cancer at a young age, and I was diagnosed with an incurable blood disorder. Since my early 20s, I knew taking care of my health was important. I see many of my peers live without mobility and joy because of unhealthy and preventable choices. I started by teaching Tai Chi and became certified in many holistic and health fields, including diabetes management and becoming a Licensed Dementia Practitioner. Once I started practising and teaching yoga, living a healthier lifestyle went hand in hand.

What role do you think policy, education and community empowerment play in improving the public’s health?

Policy, education, and community empowerment play a crucial role in improving public health. Hosea 4:6 reads, “My people perish because of lack of knowledge.” It is up to policymakers, who have the authority, to implement change. It is up to educators to teach the community about healthy choices and to demonstrate how to change one’s lifestyle. It is up to the community at large to push for change, healthier options, and to put into practice what they have been taught. The policymakers, educators, and community must work together to improve the nation’s health.

What are you most looking forward to about working with Lake Health and Wellbeing?

I am looking forward to seeing our impact. I am looking for the lightbulb moments—when someone comes up to us and tells us of their improved health, when a family has started walking together, when we go into the schools and communities and people want our advice and our help to make the change. I am looking forward to being a resource for change.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself

An interesting fact about myself is that my husband and I had “love at first sight” and got married in 50 days. Less than a year later, I moved with him to St. Kitts and Nevis. A truly romantic story.

How do you spend your time when you're not working?

When I’m not working, I am at the beach, reading, or talking to my followers on social media.
