Sweet Talk is a healthy drinking series produced as part of the You’re Sweet Enough campaign. Each episode features informative and interactive interviews with various guests who share views on non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and discuss approaches to improving the health and wellbeing of our communities through healthy drinking and eating practices.

 

Episode 1: Regional Approaches to Tackling NCDs in the Caribbean

The first episode of Sweet Talk features Sir Trevor Hassell, President of the Healthy Caribbean Coalition (HCC). He discusses the NCD epidemic in the Caribbean region and highlights the dangers of sweetened beverages on public health. Sir Trevor tells us how the HCC is championing a human rights-based approach to advocacy around reducing the consumption of sweetened beverages, and the regional calls to action for governments to implement policies, including front-of-package warning labels, bans on the advertising and sale of sugary drinks in schools, and sweetened beverage taxes.

Episode 2: The Importance of Water

In this episode of Sweet Talk, we’re highlighting water as the healthy drink choice. Latoya Matthew-Duncan, the Nutrition Surveillance Coordinator at the Ministry of Health in St. Kitts, explains why water is so important for our health and nutrition. She shares some great tips on how to make water more flavourful so that everyone can be encouraged to choose water as the necessary and healthy drink alternative to sweetened beverages.

 

Episode 3: SSBs and Women's Health

We discuss the links between sugar-sweetened beverages and hormonal health issues like fibroids with certified wellness coach Davina Baptiste.

Episode 4: SSBs and Mental Health

In this episode of Sweet Talk, our Advocacy and Research Officer, Isalean Phillip has an interesting discussion with Zahra Jacobs, a Counsellor, about the link between sugar-sweetened beverages and our mood and mental health.

Episode 5: An SSB Tax

In this episode of Sweet Talk, our Advocacy and Research Officer, Isalean Phillip has an interesting and informative discussion with Dr Marissa Carty, the NCD Coordinator at the Ministry of Health in St Kitts, about fiscal policies to tackle non-communicable diseases, specifically an SSB tax.

Episode 6: The Patient Perspective

In this episode, we sit down with two NCD patients, Agnes Mills and Arthur Adams learn about their experiences of living with type 2 diabetes and get their thoughts on what can be done to prevent and control NCDs in St. Kitts and Nevis.
