The Global Week for Action on NCDs, organised by the NCD Alliance, is an annual opportunity to bring attention to the urgent need to address non-communicable diseases (NCDs). This year’s theme, Time to Lead, called on leaders from all sectors to take bold and decisive action to tackle the global NCD burden. It also underscored the importance of creating platforms for young people to share their perspectives, concerns, and ideas for change. At Lake Health and Wellbeing, we embraced this theme by hosting a youth-led panel discussion, giving the next generation a stage to lead the conversation on NCDs.
Youth-Led Panel Discussion
Our youth-led panel discussion was held brought together a diverse and dynamic group of young people. Moderated by Michele Baker, our Advocacy Officer, the panel featured:
- Davina Slader, Fiona Zhang and Genesia Pemberton, Youth Health Advocates from Lake Health and Wellbeing.
- Crannie Cranston, Executive Member of the St Kitts Nevis Association of Persons with Disabilities.
- Dr Tivon Browne, Medical Doctor with the Ministry of Health.
The discussion covered a wide range of topics, including the pressing need for NCD policies, the benefits of sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) taxation, the impact of marketing unhealthy foods to children, and the role of leadership in creating healthier societies.
Despite initial nerves, our young panellists rose to the occasion with grace and confidence, sharing insightful contributions and engaging meaningfully with the viewing audience.
We were incredibly proud of how well they represented their generation and their commitment to advocating for change. Their discussion was both inspiring and thought-provoking, making it clear that young people are not just the leaders of tomorrow but also influential voices of today.
Preparing for Success: Public Speaking Training
In preparation for the panel, we organised a public speaking capacity-building session on 26th October for our Youth Health Advocates and the young people taking part in the discussion. Led by our Project Assistant, Jay Robinson, this session was designed to empower and prepare our panellists to shine on the day.
Participants learned essential skills, such as handling difficult questions, managing public speaking anxiety, and communicating effectively. This session helped transform nervousness into confidence, equipping our panellists with the tools they needed to excel.
