Tackling Childhood Obesity Through Creative Approaches
November 20, 2023
We are happy to announce that our organisation has received a Creative Caribbean grant for our My Healthy Heroes project. This opportunity allows us to utilise a creative approach to engage children in learning about healthy eating and adopting a healthier lifestyle, thereby contributing to our ongoing efforts to tackle childhood obesity and non-communicable diseases (NCDs)
Childhood obesity has become a pressing global issue, and innovative solutions are needed to combat this growing problem. Traditional methods often fall short when it comes to engaging young minds and instilling lasting habits. By incorporating innovative and imaginative techniques, we can capture the attention and interest of children, making healthy eating and lifestyle choices more appealing.
Through our My Healthy Heroes project, we aim to create a fun and interactive environment through augmented reality, animation and interactive activities where children can explore the benefits of nutritious food and physical activity, empowering them to make positive choices for their wellbeing.
The Creative Caribbean Grant and its Significance
We are grateful to have been selected as one of the 25 recipients of the first round of the Creative Caribbean grant, selected from 260 applicants. This grant is part of the wider regional program, “Creative Caribbean – An Ecosystem of “Play” for Growth and Development,” collaboratively implemented by UNESCO, CARICOM, and UWI with a financial contribution from the European Union and the support of the Organisation of ACP States.
Creative Caribbean seeks to stimulate sustainable growth in the Cultural and Creative Industries (CCIs) throughout the Caribbean region. By combining the power of creativity and the importance of healthy living, our My Healthy Heroes project aligns with the objectives of the Creative Caribbean program whilst promoting a holistic approach to child development
Inspiring a Healthier Future for Young Ones
Our mission is to inspire and empower children to make positive choices for their wellbeing, and hope that our My Healthy Heroes project will serve as a catalyst for this transformation. Through creative activities, we endeavor to ignite the imaginations of young minds and help them understand the significance of a healthy lifestyle. By making education around healthy eating and physical activity enjoyable and exciting, we can instill lifelong habits that will contribute to the reduction of childhood obesity and pave the way for a healthier future generation.
Conclusion
In the battle against childhood obesity, creative approaches have proven to be highly effective. With the support of the Creative Caribbean grant, our My Healthy Heroes project will harness the power of creativity to engage Caribbean children in learning about healthy eating and adopting a healthier lifestyle which ultimately will contribute to reducing the prevalence of childhood obesity and non-communicable diseases in our region.
