Living with ADHD: Learning to Navigate Executive Dysfunction

In this reflective case study, a young person shares their ongoing journey of living with ADHD, highlighting the often-overlooked struggle of executive dysfunction. Their honest account sheds light on the emotional toll of procrastination and the importance of self-compassion in learning to manage their condition.

Content warning: This case study discusses the mental and emotional challenges of living with ADHD, including experiences of stress, procrastination, and self-doubt.

I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was 10 years old. Having ADHD complicates many parts of my daily life. Of course, the most talked about symptom of ADHD is the inability to focus. However, there are many other debilitating aspects—one of the most challenging for me is how it affects my executive functioning.

ADHD can cause executive dysfunction, which for me means I often feel frozen and unable to start certain tasks, leading me to procrastinate. This frequently creates negative feedback loops: I feel stressed and ashamed about procrastinating, and that stress leads me to procrastinate even more.

Ultimately, I’m still learning how to cope with these challenges. But one important thing I’ve come to understand is that I’m doing the best I can, and my brain just works differently. Every day is a chance to learn new ways to better manage my ADHD.
