Campaign Against Trans Fats in the Caribbean

On 17th May 2024, our Advocacy and Research Officer, Michele Baker, had the distinct honour of joining a panel of global and regional stakeholders for an essential webinar hosted by the Healthy Caribbean Coalition. The focus of the event was the critical issue of eliminating industrially produced trans fats from foods in the Caribbean.

Industrially produced trans fats are artificial fats commonly found in processed foods. These harmful additives significantly increase the risk of heart disease and other severe health issues. Therefore, their elimination from our food supply is paramount for enhancing public health across the Caribbean.

During the panel discussion, Michele provided a unique perspective, blending both youth and civil society viewpoints. She shared valuable lessons learned from our advocacy efforts here in St. Kitts and Nevis, highlighting the importance of grassroots movements and community and youth involvement in pushing for policy changes, and provided some insightful reflections on how best to engage with the food industry to bring about the elimination of trans fat in their products.

This webinar is a vital component of a broader regional initiative aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of trans fats. It also seeks to motivate Caribbean governments to join the global movement to ban or limit trans fats in food products. Delays in policy action leave the public vulnerable to the adverse health effects of these unnecessary additives, making prompt action imperative.

We are proud to be part of this regional effort to advocate for healthier food policies and to protect public health. Stay tuned for more updates on this crucial issue as we continue to work towards a trans fat-free Caribbean. Your support and engagement are key to driving this change and ensuring a healthier future for all.

In addition to her participation in the webinar, Michele Baker was recently featured on the ZIZ 7 pm news. During her appearance, she discussed the urgent need for the elimination of trans fats and called on our government to take decisive action. This media feature underscores our commitment to raising awareness and advocating for policy changes that will safeguard public health.
